After twelve years of hit albums, arena-filling tours, and spearheading a guitar rock revival, Royal Blood decided it was time to step off the treadmill. Following their 2024 tour for Back To The Water Below, childhood friends Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher took a long-overdue break to recharge mentally and physically. Thatcher spent time in Brighton preparing to become a father for the first time, while Kerr fulfilled a lifelong dream of traveling to Japan for a month. Stepping away allowed the duo to rediscover life outside the band, but within just four months, their creative hunger returned stronger than ever.
By January 2025, Kerr and Thatcher entered the studio with a blank calendar and a renewed sense of purpose. Before writing, Kerr needed an honest answer to why they should even make another record. The answer lay in the unmistakable alchemy that only happens when the two of them get into a room together. Breaking the ice with the pummelling drum intro to 'Swallow The Bomb', the band shifted their focus to unexplored territory. The mission for their fifth album quickly became clear: to abandon all half-measures and create the fastest, loudest, and most ferocious Royal Blood record to date.
The resulting 10-track album, Dead Company, is a raw, self-produced, and visceral collection of weaponized bangers designed to destroy live venues. Fueled by the determination of going all-in, the music ranges from the Motörhead-inspired desert rock of lead single 'Ten Over Ten' to the emotionally spacey takeoff of 'Ride'. At the literal heart of the record is 'Mother Never Told You', a track written in just five minutes after Thatcher revealed he was going to be a dad, using the 170 BPM ultrasound heartbeat of his unborn son as the song's opening pulse.
Ultimately, Dead Company stands as a bold testament to a band that remains hopelessly obsessed with the music they make. For Royal Blood, writing these songs was about positive affirmation, endurance, and creating mantras that transform your mindset the moment you hear them. Having completely recharged their batteries after two years off the road, Kerr and Thatcher are locked, cocked, and ready to unleash their ferocious new material on live audiences once again.
