Biography

The Hickey Underworld will be playing at Pukkelpop for the fourth time. After the Antwerp-based foursome unexpectedly won the 2006 Humo’s Rock Rally, they spent the next three years playing as many live shows as possible, giving their sound time to mature. Swelling to bursting, their throbbing musical eruption finally came at the beginning of 2009 in an untitled debut album filled with filthy, grungy indie punk. Produced by Bent Van Looy and fellow Poppers Reinhard Vanbergen and Niek Meul, the album is reminiscent of early Nirvana, the defunct McClusky and the very much alive and kicking but still legendary Shellac. Equally memorable: ‘Indianen’, their contribution to the Will Tura tribute ‘TuRaLuRa 2’. The Hickey Underworld is a sheer force of rock nature with a stunningly unique sound: unrelentingly hard without ever losing sight of the melody!
